Who said it was going to rain? What started out as a miserable day turned out to
be a day full of races. 18 cars made the first round call for the 2001 Cartek
Corvette Challenge Event 1 on March 17, 2001. Expectations for a larger field got
dampened by the rain Friday night and the threat of rain for Saturday. We thank all
of the drivers that braved the elements to come to Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ
to race. We also thank the guests and Corvette owners who could not race, but came
to watch, support, help out and have a grand time.
The Race went 5 rounds before we could get our winner. In the finals, John
Panuzzo in his 1996 Red Coupe squared off against Tony Belbeck in his 1987 Red
Coupe. The race was close with Panuzzo getting the win with a 12:53 run on a 12:51
dial compared to Belbeck's 14:008 on a dial in of 14:03. Belbeck broke out by
running quicker than his predicted ET.
Chris Coriell of New Egypt, NJ won the "John Panuzzo Jr. Memorial First Round
Best Reaction Time with a .506 light in his 2001 Black Corvette. Way to go Chris!
Chris was on the tree all day!
Also a special congratulations to Dennis Kazimir who managed a perfect .500 light
which unfortunately was followed by a breakout run for a loss. A perfect RT
nonetheless for a perfect guy:-).
