Corvette Challenge Club Challenge Cup Points change effective 2004 season

The inaugural season for the Club Challenge Cup was a very good one indeed with 25 racers from six different clubs competing for the coveted Cup. As with anything new, it warrants review at the end of each season to ensure it is something that will continue to progress and provide all participants a bit a fun. Given that almost half of all Club Challenge Cup participants belonged to one club, The Corvette Club of Delaware Valley, the winner and protector of the Cup for the year, we needed to look at a way to try to level the playing field some.

Many alternatives were considered but we did not want to take away the purpose for the Cup, and that is for Corvette club members to come out and have fun in a friendly competition with other Corvette clubs. In the previous year, a club received credit for all points earned by each driver that participated in an event. The club with the most members in this scoring system has can have an advantage and that it did as it won the cup by well over one hundred points. The advantage proved to be larger than expected and we feel this may have deterred participation. After carefully considering other alternatives and discussing it with leaders of the two highest finishing clubs, we have decided to make the following changes on how points are awarded to a club.

  1. Sign-up Point: Every driver that signs up for points before the first round of the first race is awarded one bonus point for the season. This point will be awarded to the club for each driver that declares him/herself as a member of a club.
  2. Staging Point: Each driver that makes it to the first round of an event is awarded one staging point for that Event. This point will be credited to the club.
  3. Bonus Points: Finally, as a bonus, the club will be awarded with the total points of its highest finishing driver at each event. For example, if club A brings five drivers and the highest finishing driver goes to the fourth round, he/she will have earned four points. These same four points will be the bonus awarded to the club.

While Club A has twice as many members and got out to a big lead in the Pre-Season, these members must attend and perform in order to maintain the lead. Please do not perceive the new points system as more than a tweak in the point system. We compared the 2003 points system to the 2004 system for last year's performance and the new system would not have affected the final standings in club rankings for 2003. It would, however, have made the battle a little closer and given hope to all clubs.

The new points system still rewards a club for "strength in numbers" participation, and now for individual club member performance. This gives each club member a brand new opportunity to contribute the driver Bonus Points at each race attended. We hope that you will all see this as a step in the right direction to maintain a little friendly competitive fun.
